With the huge increase in motorised transport here on the island of Ibiza during the last decade, we clearly need to be thinking seriously about how we are going to tackle this continuously escalating and uncomfortable situation.
Because of Ibiza's extremely dispersed demographic situation, it seems that every family needs several vehicles, in order to get around (travel to work or college, go shopping, visit friends or visit the islands beaches etc).
Because of Ibiza's extremely dispersed demographic situation, it seems that every family needs several vehicles, in order to get around (travel to work or college, go shopping, visit friends or visit the islands beaches etc).
Unless some drastic measures are put into place and very soon, the problem will only get worse, until the situation becomes completely chaotic and unbearable for everyone. Obviously, it's time to make some intelligent community backed decisions on the future of our transport systems and begin to reduce the number of motorised vehicles we allow to circulate here.
There is also the question of 'what type of energy we should use to power these vehicles', since so far, there are no electric buses and very few electric cars or bikes in Ibiza compared to other island communities.
We also have enough local renewable energy available, between solar power and biomass power and could feasibly install electric charging points all over the island to supply clean power to all the vehicles on the island.
The installation of a comprehensive network of cycle routes would surely make a great difference to the use of this kind of personal transport and would in effect give everyone the freedom to move around without causing any environmental damage at all.
What can you do?
-
Use public transport systems, electric vehicles and bicycles.
-
Lobby local administrations to install more safe bicycle lanes and special walking routes, both inside and outside urban areas, connecting town centres to country areas, in order to encourage citizens to walk or use a bicycle to get around.
-
We are currently working on a car sharing system which seems to work very well in other places and would further reduce the volume of traffic on the island.
